AWW YAY! Thank you, Kayla! Honestly, what motivates me to research and compile these things is exactly what you said so perfectly -- I need validation, commiseration, and jubilation and Sendak definitely delivered.
Sendak always delivers. I reread him all the time: his interviews, his criticism, and his fiction —and I always learn something new. Thanks for sharing his wisdom. (AND I NEED A STANDING DESK!)
So true! I can't wait to read Caldecott and Co. I've read all his fiction but nothing like that book. Also YES! I've been super into this idea of training your brain to move between creative and business tasks by physically occupying a different space. But I didn't want two full desks crowding my space. This was the perfect solution. Now I can use my big desk for illustration and making a mess. And the stand up desk for business and writing. Let the training begin ;)
After I finished roaming the house to find the perfect spot for a flap desk (thank you, by the way) I enjoyed every single word of this. The way Sendak respects his own inner child and his readers gave me goosebumps.
Comedy awards for kid books sounds like a real gas!
Haha, I'm so glad you loved the flap desk rec and the Sendak stuff. I feel the same way about the inner child quote -- I want to print some of it and put it in my office!
Thanks for that great write up! It’s always fun to read Sendak things. They’re always amazing. I’m amazed at how many deep resources there are online now… and with YouTube there are amazing Sendak sources. So it’s like a whole world of books to look into. Also the many unpublished books, along with the less known books, like Brundibar, which has so much amazing art.
Thank you, John! Seriously, so many cool things available. And Brundibar is amazing. I had no idea about the context behind the book until I did this study. So sad and powerful.
Finally coming out of my Deadline cave to say a big Gracias for the shout-out in your newsletter! ❤️
ALSO, totally Love that it's in a Maurice Sendak piece as I definitely relate to him so much! As I too feel when I am excited about my work, then the child in me is connected with the work.
Aww of course! A big Congratulations on the award! I love the playful spirit of your work (perfect for a Sendak pairing) and I'm so glad you got recognized for it :)
This is great — I love his wisdom and approach to his work. If you haven’t seen Spike Jonez’ Sendak documentary TELL THEM WHAT YOU WANT, you should seek it out.
Even better than part 1; saving this for when I need validation, commiseration, or jubilation! Well done!
