So I'm now a juniper killer.

Chainsaws, book updates, and independent bookstore day
16

Would you think twice about buying me a chainsaw or would you just go for it?

Too late. I bought myself one.

Yes, I’m back. And I made a video of what I’ve been up to lately. It includes a chainsaw, a teeny bit of “Without Me” by Eminem because it’s applicable, and me killing junipers. 2,000 lbs of junipers to be exact.

The big green button says happy belated earth day!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been feeling very overwhelmed lately. Overwhelmed by the world, life stuff, social media stuff, etc. When I pause and ask my inner self what would help her feel better, she just says, “Making silly videos and sharing them on the internet.”

So we’re going with it.

Basically I think I need little moments of absurdity and goofiness to keep me going, and if you do too, I hope these videos give you a boost for your week.

But…just in case that boost isn’t enough, here are a few kid table vibes for your week:

Kid table vibe: Standing up to bullies

This Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day. Bookstores go all out, because it’s one of their biggest days of the year. But this year, a bully is trying to get in their way: Amazon.

Amazon is doing a huge book sale on the very same day. Come on, Amazon! You can afford to lower prices because you sell a million other things which devalues books and affects the entire publishing chain but sure…offer a sale on independent bookstore day. You couldn’t give them this one thing? Ugh.

So let’s channel that childhood moment when a bully threatens to take your lunch money and you kick him in the nuts and go buy a book at an independent bookstore instead. Yeah?

Going in person is more fun, but bookshop.org also offers an online option that supports local indies. Have fun!

Kid table vibe: Sharing book recs

Here are some great books to buy:

I have so many more, but I’m running out of time, so I’ll save those for next time.

Kid table vibe: Teasing

At the real kid table, teasing usually means digging-the-ribs joking. But today it means teasing you with a few bits about my next picture book TO CATCH A GHOST.

If you didn’t see my cover reveal video that includes an action sequence in which a driving ghost challenges me to a game of chicken, go here.

Now…behold the cover!

Okay, onto the teasing brought to you by Kirkus reviews (such a tease).

Here is the pull quote they wrote:

“Hauntingly good—quirky, amusing, and deeply felt.”

And it made me so stinking happy that they noticed this:

“nods cheekily to hardboiled detective fiction”

And this pretty much made me cry:

“a book that never wastes a word yet brims with layers of personality, tenderness, and humor”

I’ll be offering some preorder book fun like prints and stickers with local indies, but if you can’t wait to preorder, I won’t stop you :)

Preorder here

Thanks for joining me at the kid table today.

I’ll see you next week. As always, I’ll save you a seat right next to me.

Your ready-to-blow-her-budget-at-independent-bookstore-day friend,

The Juniper Killer
