What a delightful romp. I’m gutted that you didn’t get the flat file and hoping it’s haunted for the call ahead lady. But not the trash can.
Enjoy your launch and most especially the time with kids and their questions and comments. I think that’s the cosmic payday we get when we make books for kids. It’s the best.
Haha, thank you, Jacob! Ooh, a haunted trash can would be interesting. I'm guessing it would haunt me by making me feel guilty for all my waste?
Also you are right about the kids being the best part. I did my first school visit ever yesterday, and we wrote a picture book together live taking ideas from the kids. It was called "How to Escape a T-Rex: the right way" and the final line was too good: "If you get swallowed by a T-Rex, don't panic. You can always just go out the other end and go play video games."
Yes! They humble me every time. Super valuable time in tons of ways. It's super-mutually beneficial. It doesn't get talked about like that - but it's so the case.
Hmm... I'd say best case the haunted trash can just throws the trash back out when you're not looking. A little polite fun trick.
Fist pumping at winning a piece of art so hard I almost knocked over my coffee and/or water cup! (I really, really shouldn't have those right next to one another like I do. Also, Rachel--you would be proud of me--I'm painting this morning!!)
Anyhow, CONGRATS on all the well-earned excitement this week--as well as all that is to come! Whoo hooo, indeed! 🥳 🎉🎈
1) Oh, yes, I love estate sales. I get what you are saying about it feeling a bit weird, but I think of flea markets as giant estate sales where it's just non-family people selling the same pre-loved stuff. And I've just always done it (my grandmother had a vintage jewelry shop we were constantly stocking, so.)
2) I have NEVER bought a delicately carved wooden trashcan, though!! And now I'm like, WHERE'S THE PICTURE, RACHEL? I mean, no pressure! (Okay, kinda some pressure?) I just need to know what I'm keeping an eye out for. :)
3) Hugs always make me feel special, and I've been lucky on that front, esp. over the past few weeks. But as for what I do for myself, it tends to be going to a book thing (because those are always, always inspirational), karaoke or writing poetry that I never intend to show anyone else.
Haha, you are hilarious. Also way to PAINT!!!! So excited for your art journey.
Thank you for the congratulations and for celebrating with me at Brick and Mortar. It meant the world!
1) You are totally right. Thank you for helping me feel less weird about them. I think what felt weird was being in their house? But it was honestly cool to see how someone else built their life. So I think I'd do it again.
2) Haha, I totally regret not having a picture but I was already on the road. As soon as I get home and get a moment to snap a picture, I will send it immediately.
3) What a great list of special things -- I didn't know you write poetry! I did a poem a day for a while and it really helped me find my voice in children's books. You go girl!
Hope you've had a lovely week and thank you for your amazing and generous comments!
I, too, have been scooped at estate sales, but once in a very rare while I have gotten the item I sought and even negotiated a discount. Always feel like a win - even if it is not a fancy wastebasket!
Okay, so I was researching estate sales online before I went to one because I was nervous and I learned the rule that on the first day, you can’t negotiate. Is this true?
This was so freakin cute. Congratulations!!! The events (and food and trash can) sound amazing and I hope you have time to soak it up in the middle of all the craziness. :)
Thank you so much, Abi! I’ve been running around everywhere and yesterday I had the chance to return to our old stomping ground of Utah State and the Writing Center. Such good memories! Hope you are having a lovely week :)

I think I just lost my job. Too good.

I like the way you phrased that — mutually beneficial is so accurate.
And haha, love the idea of a polite haunting
Congrats, Rachel! Cheers to all the fun and celebrations these past few days and much more to come!
Aww thank you, dearest PFF Angela! We are currently driving back to Washington and I’m sending you good vibes from here all the way over to Georgia :)
What a delight, Rachel! I'm so tickled (I hope i don't pee in my pants...) Thank you!
I am OBSESSED with your genius Footloose video.
Oh my goodness, thank you, Julie! I only wish I was better at stop motion haha

Love all you share here! Happy week, Peach!!

If it is false, I’ll know for next time haha
I've never heard that rule! I usually just make a reasonable offer and go from there. :)
K, noted for next time 😂
