The Night Walk
Written and illustrated by Marie Dorléans
Published by Floris Books in 2020.
Summary
A family takes a walk in the middle of the night.
First line
“Mama opens our bedroom door, interrupting the night-time darkness.”
Favorite line
“The big hotel was wide awake; it glowed bright like a chandelier but the last house in the village was almost asleep. it had one eye open.”
This book perfectly captures the quiet excitement of a midnight walk to a destination. I love how the illustrations play with the dark blue of night and the yellow of light. The textures of the houses and the characters complement the graphic shapes. I also love how Marie plays with the highlights around characters and the light dancing across the page.
And that ending! I won’t spoil it, but though the tone is quiet, the anticipation builds to a very satisfying ending!
