Hi there!
I’ve been reading A SWIM IN A POND IN THE RAIN by George Saunders, and it has quickly become my favorite book on writing. There is so much to process about the stories he analyzes and his thoughts on creativity and storytelling. So, like the true nerd I am, I decided to take notes, reorganize things, and make a presentation to fully absorb it all for myself. And then I wondered if maybe some of you would be interested in it. I guess we’ll see ;)
I highly recommend you get the book because Saunders teaches these things in the context of short stories and so you get examples and you get to practice what he is teaching you in real time. But if you are like me and want to revisit the information you learn, the presentation is one way to do it.
Some things I’ve enjoyed recently
Watch: Atlanta (Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we sit there in silence processing it all. Sometimes we cry. It’s profound and interesting and weird in all the right ways.)
Read: George Saunders’s newsletter —his Office Hours Q&A posts are so helpful. And also read his book which I already told you about.
Another watch n’ read: Julie Falatko’s Do the Work newsletter is so thought-provoking and funny. Recently she created a video post on browsing that inspired me to pick up random things at the library and bookstore. It got me out of my slump, and I’ve discovered so many fun things that I will write more about in a future post.
Upcoming events
Tune into Instagram Live on Tuesday, March 28 at 5PM MST for an AT THE KID TABLE chat with award-winning children’s book author Stephen Briseño!
Well, now I’ll go work on my book. I’m honestly having so much fun writing and illustrating and working with my editor. Hopefully I get to share more about it all soon.
Thanks for sitting with me AT THE KID TABLE today. I’ll save you a seat next week!
