Dentist mice and talking bones

William Steig's DOCTOR DE SOTO and THE AMAZING BONE

Hi there!

So I’m trying out this whole video format thing and I finally figured out how to do subtitles for those of you who want to see the pictures but don’t want the sound. I mean…sometimes I’m in line at the grocery store and I want to watch a five minute video about a William Steig story without everyone else hearing it. Now you can too!

In this video, we explore the high stakes of death in William Steig’s award-winning books DOCTOR DE SOTO and THE AMAZING BONE. I also wanted to know how Steig created such complex characters in such a small space and why an absurd story about a talking bone feels so deep. I did my best to figure out what makes these books work; I would love to know your thoughts too.

This big button is green because it is excited about this fantastic news.

This week at my desk…

The creative process feels messy — like I’m walking in the dark with a dinky flash light—which feels particularly scary with a deadline involved. BUT after exploring for a month with nothing feeling all the way right, I found a missing piece of the puzzle and one full spread snapped into place. I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but it felt HUGE. I can’t show you much, but I’ll show you a small moment with the main character.

I love him so much. And I hope you do too.

This week at my house…

Aaron and I are embracing the “we are too tired to cook anything so we will get frozen food and call it good but we also got salads for lunch so we’re awesome” lifestyle.

This week in my neighborhood.…

Our townhome complex announced that they will be putting a gator head into our community pool to scare away the ducks. “Don’t touch it!” I will send a picture because how could I not.

One free way to say “I like this” is to share it.

Okey dokey, thanks for sitting AT THE KID TABLE with me today. I’ll save you a seat next week!

Your hoping-everyone-isn’t-tired-of-the-Steig-studies-yet-because-she-has-more-fun-stuff-coming friend,
